Crystallography

The exhibit about crystallography tells us about the inner structure of the minerals and explains how this structure is important for the outer properties of the minerals, such as crystal form, hardness, colour, lustre etc.

The symmetrical conditions that exist between the atoms in the interior of the crystal are explained and how this symmetry is repeated in the outer shape of the crystal. We also tell about the hardness of the minerals, e.g. the soft graphite and the hard diamond, two minerals consisting of the same element, carbon, that are extremely different both as regards hardness, lustre and transparency.
